ts10 is the 1st ep of the toneseries project. born from the collaboration between french music producer, live performer and dj - david k, and lumièreslanuit s co-founder and an der grenze s founder - edouard morin. however, it isn t clear which artist from their extended crew stands behind this 1st release, as if the berlin-based music label wanted to focus on the music rather on the artist. ts10 consists of two tracks, both deep and groovy. whereas ailleurs disseminates the perfect warm-up groove, desert snowflakes fires off a more dancefloor-driven vibe. with regard to the artwork, as shown on the cover, each track has its own colour. there is neither a a nor a b-side. the same applies to the record vinyl itself. each track stands on it own. as a result, ailleurs and desert snowflakes distinguish themselves from each other through their vibes and colours, although they remain in the same spirit. in summary, toneseries brings together the idea of interdependence between music and design: what colour follows on from music and, in return, which musicality comes out of colours.

according to white material pair galcher lustwerk and alvin aronson, their first collaborative album under the studio ost alias contains a mix of breezy electro, aquatic dub, high speed jit, and shimmering atmospherics. while clearly tongue-in-cheek, it s a fairly accurate description. certainly, there s a fluidity, moodiness and palpable sense of atmosphere at the heart of scenes, which casually drifts between hard-edged club workouts, hazy post-club fare and dreamy, horizontal experiments. it was apparently recorded over a three-year period, during jam sessions at various new york studios. its the spontaneous aspect of its creation that has the biggest effect, and makes the whole thing feel like fleeting snapshots of moments in time.

keeping with the rough release rate of an album every couple of years, prime numbers label boss trus me is back with his fourth full length, planet 4. featuring nine cuts of intergalactic techno and once again marking a considerable sonic evolution for this acclaimed uk artist. never one to do the same trick twice, david james wolstencroft uses his latest album as a vehicle for his own interest in deep space, physics and dark matter. it is those subjects that have occupied his mind in recent years, and those subjects that inform this brilliantly otherworldly album. where previous lps have variously been funk and soul heavy, or openly analogue and physical, this one is a more subtle and supple techno affair that is as cerebral as it is seductive. starting with a monologue that suggests that man has already landed on mars, 1979 is a cut that immediately places you somewhere in orbit. spooky synths and sci-fi sounds are eerie and atmospheric and very much set a perfect tone. from there, there is slow, elastic and unsettling mood music on the unexplained , deep and insular techno on dark flow and trippy dan bell style minimalism on ring round heart . the second half of the lp touches on chunky dub, manic and melodic grooves. this is a coherent statement that holds together conceptually and musically. as well as providing plenty of dynamite for the more discerning dance floor, planet 4 is also a delightfully detailed affair that will work just as well on headphones late at night.

australia’s deep street soul, since signing to freestyle records in 2008, have earned a reputation as being right at the grittiest end of the hard funk scene who made a big impact from the outset - with even the mc5’s wayne kramer saying that their version of kick out the jams “... is the greatest version of the song ever recorded!”. from their debut self titled instrumental long player, to the 2011 follow up look out, watch out (and the addition of vocalist mighty may johnston) this band have grown, matured and honed thier songwriting skills, as well as maintaining their rare ability to really capture the essence of the original raw funk & soul artists that inspire them. 2016 sees them return with this quite spectacular new collection. whilst the diamond hard, driving grooves remain undiminished, there is also no doubt that the bands song writing has developed to an equally assured level. case in point is souls come alive - from monique boggia’s wurlitzer electric piano intro, the blistering horns and may johnson’s simply exemplary singing - the songs instant appeal will be lost on no one with an ear for genuine organic soul music. come alive also features guest vocalists joshua tavares and kylie auldist - come alive is deep street souls finest work - no if’s, but’s or maybe’s. it s a done deal.

about a year ago nico stojan and acid pauli met at the studio to record some music. while doing so they discovered their common love for sample based production. so they were basically digging into old vinyls and eventually these three tracks came along. nothing more to say, but enjoy. call of the valley is the first release on the new label ouie: there has been a shift in this tiny piece of massive world and, like all other shifts, they are documented by those who were there. ouie is the label to do just that, created by the people who were there, making those shifts.

the first compilation on the dresden based label shtum unites three label regulars and one newbie with four tracks suitable for rampant basements. -motorcity racers- has been on rotation for quite some time amongst the label heads and is the first sign from poland s chino on shtum. it floats somewhere between dirty detroit and the rough corners of the netherlands. leibniz delivers the -real life-, a relatively straight follow-up to his latest ep, while jaures hit their drum machines like there is no tomorrow. perm s cut is all loopy and succeeds in creating an irresistible atmosphere with just a few elements. the artwork comes courtesy of carl-johannes schulze.

italian native, christian lisco is well known for having an extremely envious collection of vintage synthesisers and drum machines housed in his basement. it was there that four ridiculously special acid cuts that we are prone to immediately fall in love with on first reception. -your joy” which sees the collaborative efforts of singer, michael clifford, evokes the feeling of the early age of american house music. the next set of tracks were treated with a surrounding of acid basslines and heavy drums. mixed live and directly recorded to tape.

nice price deal !!! it’s been nearly two years since the last sanys record. in the meantime, techno has flirted with noise and industrial, often resulting in gloomy self-indulgence. thankfully, there is no such creative verbiage on this seventh instalment of downfall theory. “seizure” starts the release with a robust, stepping rhythm and relentless stabs playing out against atmospheric, eerie textures. it’s like shed’s wax project jamming with deepchord. next up is ‘natural high’. this is one of sanys’ darkest moments so far, inspired by the depth and length of the st petersburg winter, it sees the russian producer lay down a visceral, muddy rhythm, against which ghostly shrieks and waves of frosty chords, blown in from the baltic sea, meet.

christopher rau is one of smallvilles steady mainstays, with yamato he is delivering four tracks, that perfectly describe the seductive cosmos of smallvilles sound. there is nods to the past as well as a way to a timeless future. carefully evolving melody, voices and something caressing from somewhere far away- but within your heart in just a moment. its bubbling and telling stories from the inside but its still targeted straight to a dancefloor- dedicated to the sweetest ones of the world.

for our next chapter, there is parrish smith. in his wicked game of creation and demolishment he s working on combining organic and mental material which brings him to his first full-length ep. his melted personal stories convey through rough mechanics and exuberant expressionism. this tells the story of fulfilment, development and setbacks. mixing up illusional layers of metal drums with harsh and rough moving synthesis. polyrhythmical electroniczzz for the mind.

taking the release-portfolio into account, rampa built over the last years on keinemusik, him adding a new ep to the label s catalogue is worth every credit of trust. and this very “trust” ep is living up to that not only by its name. it certainly offers value for money, considering km-releases have mostly been two-trackers. there are four cuts on this one, each one following a different approach, making it also a hella versatile record.

in the place of the eternal blazing sun there exists an underworld, a dark and cold space of interlinking caves and dank corridors. occupying the subterranean land is an army of worker drones, busying themselves with a never ending series of tasks, both laborious and mechanical.

pete herbert drops the second release on paradise row - the imprint he and dicky trisco set up to release their own output. mango moon is a very herbertesque number pumped full of musical influences from house to italo to disco, but with an eagle eye at all times on driving the dance floor really wild. pedro demonstrates his years of experience as both a producer and a dj in a track that captures so much of the territory he has covered in both guises over the years. with its pumping live disco underbelly, its melodic italo-style keys riding on top and its rock solid drums, it really is a very classy production by a dj/ producer who knows where he wants to go and how to get us all there at the same time. meanwhile on the flip, his label and dj compadre dicky trisco flips the track in a live disco direction with an epic take of his own that throws more than a few surprises into the mix. dicky teases the dancefloor with a long build up but just wait until those wicked keys by faze action s robin lee drop in! quality stuff, & more great dance floor tackle courtesy of paradise row.

francesco tristano really needs no introduction lately, his music speaks volumes and his reputation precedes him with that said we are happy to share place on lafayette with you once again, this time including some stunning remixes. the first one is a collaboration between two highly respected artists: thomas gandey and radio slave. the two take the track further into tech-house territory with the percussion driving while multiple layers begin the fall into one another, achieving a beautifully elegant and jazzy end result. gutis vision is much deeper, with hints of dub here and there as the artists drives the tension up and creates a stunning groove. the final remix come from tuff city kids, who are known for their sometimes unconventional approach to making music, and in this case, it works. they channel a raw vibe and create something that is quite possibly the furthest thing from the original in terms of percussion. the pianos keep the thread strong, and the rhythm takes care of the rest.

genesis is the fifth studio album by american rapper and leader of the new school alumnus busta rhymes. released in 2001, the album debuted at number 7 on the billboard 200 and ultimately sold 1 million copies in the us and was certified platinum. the fourth single from the album, “pass the courvoisier part ii”, peaked at number 11 on the billboard hot 100.

bass culture reach that magnificent milestone of 50 releases with an extra special ep from someone who has become part of labels inner circle, the infallible mr g. set up in 2009 by paris stalwart djulz, bass culture records has maintained a consistently high level of music, crossing from techno into house and back again, always with a focus on quality over quantity. mr g delivers two special gems from his arsenal of weaponary to mark the 50th bsss culture release. the first, * transient* sees mr g in contemplative mood, taking a studied approach with this deep, soulful cut. softened pads are drizzled over a punchy low end, with tough, crisp beats supporting a stirring vocal which urges everybody to get up on their feet. the nineties organ lick gives it an almost sorrowful feel, and those pads continue to takes us up to the skies. a beauty. on the flip, * crumple zone* goes straight for the jugular with a driving b-line, alarming stabs and finger-clicking percussion to get that head nodding. combined with garbled, hypnotic vocal clips, its a mesmerising, eyes down cut for the late night heads. towards the latter part of the track, a naughty riff comes in and adds another layer of sleaze to proceedings. and there you have it, mr g proves yet again why he is such a all-round don and bass culture celebrates 50 releases with panache.

our third release untitled emerges as a moody four tracker born in matteo luis home studio. the title track is the driest start off there could be. it monotonously heads for the tracks climax in manner of a cyclone, a straight stomper that evolves its full strength within its last solution, surprising with an acidic and dubby face that makes you want to dive right into the dashing structure of its last minutes.

modern love very rarely reaches out to artists outside of its immediate surroundings, it’s happened just a couple of times in the last 14 years. but there’s something about philippe hallais that compelled the label to ask him if he wanted to do something together. philippe has released music on a bunch of cool labels (l.i.e.s., the trilogy tapes, delsin, in paradisum), but hearing the first tracks recorded for lighthouse stories, it was obvious philippe was hitting on something new: a kinda weird slow/fast dance music that sounded like a footwork variant sewn up with an exotic production style that was impossible to pin down. these tracks eventually splintered off into different directions, held together by a strong sense of narrative and motion harking back to a teenage obsession with turntablism, detroit electro and ghetto house, and eventually juke and grime. although he’s spent the last few years focusing on more industrial dancefloor variants, for lighthouse stories philippe turned to these foundational influences, as well as his love of mixtapes and sound collages full of unfinished ideas, skits and experiments, all things that inform the flow of this new album. lighthouse stories captures a sense of nostalgia well, but is also a futuristic vision full of that exploratory, vibrant spirit that’s so hard to find in electronic music these days. frames of reference are hard, but in places it reminds us of the dusted swagger of anthony shake shakir, the acquatic drexciyan movements of ultradyne, a loose-limbed take on shangaan, and of actress at his most submerged. but ultimately, it’s an album made by a producer looking to his personal history while forging new ground, pushing ahead with little regard to convention and ultimately ending up with something completely unique: a kind of intimate journal rendered in bright colours and odd shapes.

ostgut ton reissues the final zehn of zehn with original tracks by etapp kyle, marcel fengler with elif biçer, and steffi. 2015 marked ostgut tons ten-year anniversary, celebrated with an extensive 30 track compilation release, titled ostgut ton | zehn, spread out over ten 12inch vinyl records housed inside a limited box set. this sampler sold out in no time, which is why ostgut ton is re-issuing these ten 12-es individually in 2016. all good things must come to an end, and so does this label compilation with its final re-release. long-time ostgut ton collaborator elif biçer lends her tantalising vocals to marcel fenglers uk-spirited, breaky and dark beats, with, vocals and lyrics aside – its open snare drum roll, the brazen sounds and seething bassline being the most distinctive elements of fallin on a. on the flipside up-and-coming etapp kyle opens b1 with blistering bleeps atop a solid kick, brushed percussion and surging, subtly atmospheric synth pads. there arent many producers as productive as steffi is: löweborschtel continues her past electro-influenced releases on b2: bouncy and rhythmic, moody yet spot-on, dreamy while fierce. to the next zehn years!

marcus lambkin aka shit robot returns with his third full length album for dfa records, entitled what follows. the 11-track album was conceived and recorded at marcus’ home studio in a small town outside stuttgart, worked on in various new york studios and then mixed over the course of 11 intense & coffee-fuelled days in dfa label mate juan maclean’s new hampshire studio. the album follows lambkin’s previous long-players, from the cradle to the rave (2010) and we got a love (2014), which drew plaudits from the likes of the guardian and pitchfork, and featured reggie watts and james murphy among the array of contributors.
